They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and sometimes this is very true. Photographer Rodrigo Kunstmann captured one such image when he was called upon to shoot the birth of Isabela Pereira de Jesus.
A meme-worthy expression
Born on February 13, 2020, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Isabela came out and immediately had a meme-worthy expression. She stared down at the doctors who delivered her with an adorable angry look that has taken the internet by storm.
Kunstmann, who photographs weddings and births, first shared the image on Facebook with the caption in Portuguese “Today is my birth and I don’t even have clothes for this.”
“She opened her eyes wide and didn't cry, she made a 'sulky' face, her mother gave a kiss and it was only after they cut the umbilical cord that she started to cry," Kunstmann told Crescer.
The stare lasted a few seconds, but luckily Kunstmann was there to capture it and share it with Isabella's mother, who said that her daughter "was born a ready meme.”
Recognizing faces
It's hard to tell whether Isabela was genuinely peeved at her doctors or whether she was simply making a random expression that seemed angry. However, research has shown that babies can recognize faces as early as four months old.
A 2012 research from the Stanford Vision and NeuroDevelopment Lab found that, as early as four months old, babies' brains already process faces at nearly adult levels. Other research has found that this process can even occur as early as in the womb. The study revealed that unborn infants in the womb turn their heads towards shapes that resemble faces.
All this could mean that Isabela was indeed responding to the doctors around her. However, since she is unable to tell us herself, we will never know. For now, we just have to enjoy the fabulous meme-worthy pic that came out of this ordeal.
